An Explanation

This isn’t really a post, so much as an update.  I’m sure some of you have noticed that I haven’t written in a while.  It’s not that I’m lazy.  Okay… it’s kinda that I’m lazy.  But all joking aside, I take very seriously.  I don’t just toss my rants together and post them.  I craft my rants.  Each entry goes through a process before I post it, where I check my claims and my references to make sure they’re accurate.  I also make sure that the potential objections are considered and given consideration, so that even if I am biased (and I probably am), no one can accuse me of not being fair.

Just to let you know, I’ve got two articles in the works right now.  One on the Intelligent Design Movement, and one on the Death Penalty.  But I’m not going to post them until I can be proud of them.  I may end up posting the Intelligent Design as a series of articles, because I have so much to say about it, but my point is, it’s going to be a while.  Until then, check out The Passive Aggressive Podcast.

Jah bless.

The Passive Aggressive Podcast: Episode 7

This is wayyy late. Anyway, on this episode Glenn and I tackle the concept of America as a “Christian Nation.” Is it true? Were our forefathers religious zealots who established a Constitution based on Christian principles?  Did they intend America to be the beacon of light that would save the rest of the world by spreading the gospel?  I think you know the answer already, but join us anyway, as we explore the most tired of Christian claims–that their god belongs on our money, in our pledge, in the courthouse, and in every other place that the Constitution says it doesn’t.  Other topics include Utah, miscarriages, pizza & morons (a winning combination), the supposed Obama missile defense logo, the first and second amendment, and the A-Hole of the Week.

Rape… Sometimes, it’s Her Own Fault?!

Recently, some female residents of Bristol, VA were handed a pamphlet titled Women & Girls by some, shall we say “colorful characters.” The pamphlet asserts that females who refuse to dress modestly and instead choose to dress, oh I dunno, however the hell they want, are causing men to sin in their hearts and are therefore sinning themselves.

But wait, there’s more!

The pamplet also suggests that female rape victims are partially responsible for rape:

“You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed,” it begins. “Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged?”

“Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin,” the leaflet states. “By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?

Gee. That’s a great question. Let me think about that one…

Rape is a crime. Rape is not sexy, nor is it even sex. Rape is an act of violence committed by a criminal who is unable to control his criminal urges. No matter the provocation, the only person responsible for rape is the rapist. End of story.

Or maybe they’re right. Maybe this elderly woman was wearing a sexy, skimpy nightgown to bed, and the burglar just couldn’t control the devil inside him. Or perhaps this two-year-old girl was dressed way too inappropriately for her age. Hows about we make all women wear a burka? Maybe then rape would cease, right?

Oh, wait

Let’s just put the kibosh on this right now. Rape is a very serious offense, committed by seriously disturbed individuals. Rape is not some hot-button word that you can just throw on a pamphlet to pretend like you won an argument. Let me not even get into what the bible says about it.

Rape is not funny. Rape is not trivial. And rape is not her fault.

Anti-Gay Senator Arrested After Leaving Gay Club

Another day, another Christian anti-gay bigot (a little redundant, I know) discovered to be a closet homo.

This time, the hypocrite-du-jour is GOP state senator Roy Ashburn (CA).  Ashburn, as many Californians know, was a staunch opponent of gay rights who fought fervently against same-sex marriage in California and even organized several anti-gay marriage rallies. You know the kind of guy I’m talking about… your typical “family values” Republican senator with a sour disposition and a hard-on (so to speak) for men only being allowed to marry women.

Anyway, Mr. No Homo was recently pulled over and arrested for DUI. Okay, so he pulled a Mel Gibson.  No big deal, right? He probably tossed a few anti-Semitic remarks at the cops while they threw him into the squad car. Certainly Republican a-holes have been able to maintain their Christian identity following much worse atrocities in the past, haven’t they? What else is new? How does that make him a hypocrite?

Wait for it…

He was leaving a popular gay club at the time.

Dramatic pause…

With an unidentified male.

Police reported that Ashburn, who reeked of booze and had watery red eyes, failed a sobriety test and was therefore under the influence of alcohol.  So there goes the “I was just in there trying to hand out gospel tracts” excuse.  The car, incidentally, was a state vehicle, which only made things worse.

The senator later issued an apology for the incident:

I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.

You’ll notice that, in his apology, the senator makes no effort to clarify whether he’s talking about the DUI, or the gayness.  And oddly enough, the comments made by his family and colleagues didn’t address it either.  He seems to be trying to get the American public to completely ignore the fact that he was leaving a gay club, as evidenced by this recent photo of Ashburn showing the state of California that he’s totally not gay at all.

Let that be a lesson to all you conservative folk: if you’ve built your career on treating gays like diseased, third-class citizens, and one night you happen to find yourself leaving a gay club, drunk off of apple martinis and accompanied by a Hispanic man with a handlebar mustache (this is mere speculation, of course)… it might be a good idea to let the other guy take the wheel.

Literally, I mean.
